How convenient it would be to use my computer as the landline telephone. I could call people directly from my Microsoft Outlook contact list, I could record my phone calls even the calls I receive from pesky telemarketers and I have a record of who I called and when.

With the voice recording feature, I could do voiced contracts over the telephone, “Do I have permission to record your agreement to take up this offer with Me”. If someone decided to hurl undeserved insults or even life threats over the phone I could deliver to the Police a perfect recording of their voice and the time they rang. In some circumstances I could also deliver the abuse hurler’s telephone number.

So how do you turn your computer into a telephone you’re asking? SIP Gateways are the device which connects your computer to any telephone line or PSTN line. PSTN stands for Public Switched Telephone Network, which is the wire that pokes out of the wall which connects to the telephone you normally use. The SIP Gateway simply connects to the wire the pokes out of the wall and then connects to your computer, safely and securely; result = SIP-Phone.

Once connected you have a SIP-Phone, ready to record conversations and dial numbers directly from your computer! Have you ever wondered what the little telephone symbol in Microsoft Outlook is for? A SIP-Phone connection or a VOIP connection. The problem I find with VOIP is the quality and reliability of the connection varies from country to country and even suburb to suburb. The good old landline though never fails and doesn’t need an internet connection.
